A nuchal translucency scan is a sonographic prenatal screening to detect chromosomal abnormalities in a fetus.
This is one of the kinds of ultrasound that is done, during the time between fertilization of the egg by the sperm (conception) and week 12 of pregnancy.
This test measures the size of the clear tissue, called the nuchal translucency, at the back of your baby’s neck. It’s not unusual for a fetus to have fluid or clear space at the back of its neck.
But too much clear space can indicate Down syndrome or might show another chromosome abnormality like Patau syndrome or Edwards syndrome.
That's why a test typically scheduled between weeks 11 and 13 of pregnancy is important. This scan is more effective combined with a blood test. Then the sonographer can estimate your accurate date of delivery.
As a mother, you want to see your growing child in your womb, NT scan is a safe and needed test at your growing stage of pregnancy.
